The 38th Alabama Infantry spent the spring of 1864 in a retreating flanking action that saw it involved at Rocky Face Mountain, Dalton, Cassville, Resaca, New Hope Church and other skirmishes.
They left winter quarters north of Dalton at Crow Valley on May 7,1864, with Colonel Augustus Lankford in command. This period is sometimes called
the 100-Day Battle. Colonel Lankford was soon to be captured at Resaca carrying the regimental colors as three color bearers had been taken out.
The Federals took possession of the southern stronghold of Atlanta on July 22, 1864.
