This sword belonged to Capt. John J. Winston.

Capt. Winston, who hailed from Green County, re-enlisted and transferred from the 32nd Alabama Regiment and was elected Captain of Co. F, 38th Alabama Infantry on May 3, 1862. He transferred to the 18th Alabama Regiment on June 10, 1863, and became their Adjutant. He resigned as Adjutant of the 18th on Nov. 20, 1863, to serve in the CSA Cavalry.
